Why did Hillsong Church Founder Brian Houston Resign?
Brian Houston resigned as global head pastor of Hillsong Church, which he started over 40 years ago.
In a letter issued Wednesday, the boards of the Australian congregation and the global ministry announced their acceptance of his resignation.
Houston had been on leave from the church while awaiting his court appearance on allegations that he had covered up his late father’s abuse.
Hillsong has also investigated the pastor in two instances of inappropriate behavior, according to reports last week. One concerned text message was addressed to a female staff member, while the other occurred three years ago when Houston drunkenly entered a woman’s hotel room during a Hillsong conference.
Houston has maintained his innocence and announced that he wants to enter a “not guilty” plea. He resigned as the church’s worldwide senior pastor in March 2022 after being found to have violated the church’s moral code in his behavior with two women.
