Phil Hellmuth is a famous poker player who grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, where he graduated from Madison West High School. During his school years, he struggled with grades and making friends, and he described himself as the “ugly duckling” of his family.

After three years at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, he dropped out to pursue his dream of being a full-time poker player.

He won the 1989 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event and the 2012 World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) Main Event, and he was inducted into the WSOP’s Poker Hall of Fame in 2007.

He has lived in Palo Alto, California, with his wife, Katherine Sanborn, a Stanford University psychiatrist, and their two boys, Phillip III and Nicholas, since 1992.
