Aleksandr Nikitin was a Russian chess player, coach, and theorist Born on 27 January 1935, in Moscow, Nikitin attended and graduated from the Moscow Power Engineering Institute.

He then worked on a production at the MPEI Special Design Bureau. Nikitin participated in the 1959 USSR Chess Championship, where he then served as a coach in 1963 with Igor Bondarevsky.

In 1973, he met Garry Kasparov for which in the next three years Nikitin served as his coach for chess until 1990. Nikitin then served as the coach of Étienne Bacrot in the late 1990s.

In 1993, he has honored with the FIDE title of International Master. Nikitin was also honored as the Honored Coach of the USSR. Nikitin died on 5 June 2022, at the age of 87. He was a fantastic coach, and without him, Kasparov would not have become the great Kasparov he is today.

Nikitin, a powerful International Master, took a break from chess to focus on scientific studies, but then returned to the game he loved and became one of the most illustrious chess tutors in history.

In 1975, he met a very young Candidate Master Garik Kasparov, and it was a watershed moment for both of them. Nikitin and Kasparov had a long relationship and only split up in the early 1990s.

Nikitin also collaborated with Etienne Bacrot, the world’s best junior at the time. I recall playing a game with Etienne in which, after the final game, Nikitin appeared on stage and joined our postmortem discussion.

At the time, I was the European Champion; Bacrot was a rising young star with a rating of 2650+, but this peaceful senior gentleman, at 66, was on a level with us.
