Ex-President Blaise Compaoré of Burkina Faso is a Burkinabé former politician.

When he was President Thomas Sankara’s right-hand man in the 1980s, he spearheaded a coup that resulted in the assassination of Sankara.

Later, he launched a “rectification” program, which overturned Sankara’s Marxist and Third Worldist principles.

In 1991, 1998, 2005, and 2010, he prevailed in elections despite the fact that they were won under dubious conditions.

The 2014 Burkinabé insurrection was sparked by his effort to change the constitution to extend his 27-year reign. Compaoré resigned on October 31st, 2014, and then fled to the Ivory Coast.
