Brett Kavanaugh is an American lawyer and jurist serving as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. In 2003, Bush nominated Kavanaugh to the D.C. Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals for the first time. Due to allegations of partisanship, his confirmation proceedings dragged on for three years.
His appointment to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals was finally approved in May 2006, following talks between Democratic and Republican senators in the United States.
Kavanaugh’s appeal court opinions in four different policy areas were evaluated by two law professors for The Washington Post in an evaluation of his appellate court decisions.
On July 9, 2018, President Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh to fill Anthony Kennedy’s seat on the Supreme Court. Later in July, Christine Blasey Ford came out with allegations that Kavanaugh had sexually assaulted her in high school in the early 1980s.
Additional accusations of sexual misconduct were made by two other women. All of the charges against Kavanaugh were denied by the Supreme Court justice. A follow-up hearing was held by the Senate Judiciary Committee in response to the charges made by Ford.
A party-line vote of 11–10 ushered in a full Senate vote on confirmation.
