In St. Louis, Missouri, Underwood auditioned for American Idol, singing Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me.”
Judge Simon Cowell said she would be one of the favorites to win the competition after she sang Tiffany’s “Could’ve Been” on the top 12 girls’ night.
Underwood sang a rendition of the number-one 1980s rock hit “Alone,” made famous by Heart, during the top 11 finalists’ performance on the March 22, 2005, Idol broadcast, and Cowell prophesied that Underwood will not only win the competition but also outsell all prior Idol winners.
She swept the voting, according to one of the show’s producers, winning every week by a considerable margin. During the course of the show, she developed a following known as “Carrie’s Care Bears.”
