Geoff Blum Wiki
Geoffrey Edward Blum is a former Major League Baseball infielder who played with the Montreal Expos, Houston Astros, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, San Diego Padres, Chicago White Sox, and Arizona Diamondbacks, among others.
He presently works as a color analyst for the Houston Astros on television.
He studied sociology at the University of California, Berkeley, and was a member of the California Golden Bears baseball team before becoming a professional baseball player.
He was a member of the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod Baseball League in the summer of 1993.
The Montreal Expos selected him in the seventh round of the 1994 amateur draft, and he began his professional career with them.
During his stint with the Expos, he spent the winter of 1995 with the Hunter Eagles of the Australian Baseball League.
He was traded to the Houston Astros in exchange for Chris Truby on March 12, 2002, following three years in Montreal.
The Houston Astros signed Blum to a one-year contract worth $1.1 million on November 20, 2007. A club option for 2009 was also included in the deal.
Blum returned to the Astros in 2009, mostly as a third baseman. That season, he hit ten home runs, drove in 49 runs, and was noted for his outstanding defense at all infield positions.
Blum re-signed with the Astros on October 30, 2009. The contract was for $1.5 million for the 2010 season and contained a $1.65 million mutual option for 2011, which was refused, leaving him a free agent.
Blum’s season was cut short in July 2010 when he injured his elbow while putting on his shirt after a game. “There is probably 90 percent of us in the big leagues with loose bodies flying around,” he said.
It just so happened that it tightened up on me after the game. The damn injury has nothing to do with the garment.
He joined the Houston Astros as a color analyst on January 12, 2013. Todd Kalas, who is in charge of play-by-play, is his partner.
The Astros confirmed at the end of the 2019 season that Blum and Kalas would be back as broadcast partners until the 2021 season.
