21-year-old Ikemefuna “Ickey” Ekwonu was born on October 31, 2000, he is an American football offensive lineman for the National Football League’s Carolina Panthers (NFL). He is 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 310 lb.
He is of Nigerian heritage and attended North Carolina State University, where he has selected as a consensus All-American and received the Jacobs Blocking Trophy as the top blocker in the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2021. The Panthers picked Ekwonu sixth overall in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Ekwonu attended Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he grew up. Ekwonu chose North Carolina State over Georgia Tech, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia to play collegiate football.
Ekwonu started the last seven games of his rookie season at left tackle, leading the team with 37 pancake blocks and earning a spot on the FWAA Freshman All-America team.
He started as a left guard for the Wolfpack in his second season. During the season, Ekwonu was shifted back to left tackle and led the Wolfpack with 50 pancake blocks and 22 knockdowns. He was awarded second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) at both guard and tackle by the Associated Press.
