Morton M. Mower, an American cardiologist and co-inventor of the automated implanted cardioverter defibrillator (AICD), died on April 25, 2022. At Sinai Hospital and Cardiac Pacemakers Inc., he worked in a variety of positions. He joined Mower Research Associates as chairman and CEO in 1996.
In 2002, he was admitted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for his work in the 1970s alongside Michel Mirowski on the automated implanted cardioverter defibrillator.
His study was continuing at Johns Hopkins University’s biomechanical engineering laboratory.
Morton Mower Early Life
Morton Mower grew up in Frederick, Maryland, but was born in Baltimore. His mother reared three children while his father worked as a shoemaker.
Mower worked in his Uncle Sam’s Atlantic City salt-water bathhouses during the summers while he was in grade school. He went to work at his uncle’s toy business on the Atlantic City boardwalk shortly after that.
A family physician made frequent house calls to treat Mower’s uncle when he was 15 years old. The exceptional level of patient care offered by Mower’s family physician encouraged him.
As a result, Mower applied for medical school at Johns Hopkins University.
