John Aylward was an American actor who lived from November 7, 1946, until May 16, 2022.

He is best recognized for his roles in the NBC television programs The West Wing as former DNC chairman Barry Goodwin and ER as Dr. Donald Anspaugh. In Half-Life 2: Episode Two, he also provided the voice of Dr. Arne Magnusson.

Aylward grew up in the Seattle area of Washington. He went to St. Joseph’s Elementary School and Prep High School before graduating from Garfield High School in 1965. In 1970, he graduated from the University of Washington’s Professional Actor’s Training Program.

He was a company member of the Seattle Repertory Theatre for 15 years before becoming a television and film actor in the 1990s. After witnessing him in a 1996 performance of “Psychopathia Sexualis” at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, Carol Flynt, co-producer of ER, gave him an audition.

Aylward died on May 16, 2022, in Seattle, at the age of 75.
