John Sterling (born John Sloss on July 4, 1938) is an American sportscaster best known for his work as the radio play-by-play announcer for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball. Beginning in 1989, Sterling called 5,060 straight Yankees games before taking a four-game vacation in July 2019.
Sterling returned to New York in 1989 to announce Yankees games on WABC radio. Since then, he’s stayed with the Yankees, now announcing games on WFAN radio and the New York Yankees Radio Network’s affiliates.
Suzyn Waldman has been his announcing partner since 2005; other announcing partners include Jay Johnstone (1989–1990), Joe Angel (1991), Michael Kay (1992–2001), and Charley Steiner (2002–2004).
The Yankees struck a ten-year deal with WFAN in 2013, and Sterling was retained. [9] He has a contract that runs until the 2022 season. Sterling signed a new deal with WFAN for 2022 on October 18, 2021, with the possibility of a reduced schedule.
Sterling Sloss was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to advertising executive Carl H.T. Sloss and Gladys (Hodrov) Sloss. When the 1940 United States Census was taken on April 4, John was one year old and lived with his family in Manhattan.
