Moss was born on January 16, 1974, in Croydon, Greater London, to barmaid Linda Rosina Moss and airline employee Peter Edward Moss, and grew up in the Addiscombe and Sanderstead parts of the borough.

When Moss was thirteen, her parents split. Ridgeway Primary School and Riddlesdown High School, both in Purley, were her educational institutions.

Moss was discovered as a model at JFK Airport in New York in 1988, when she was 14 years old, by Sarah Doukas, the founder of Storm Management.

When she was 16, Corinne Day made black-and-white images of herself for The Face, styled by Melanie Ward, in a shoot titled “The 3rd Summer of Love.”

Day called the images “dirty realism” or “grunge,” and Moss was presented as a youthful unknown.

Moss then starred in the highly successful Levi’s campaign ‘Levi’s for Girls,’ created by The Design Corporation and shot by Corinne Day.

Moss went on to become the “anti-supermodel” of the 1990s, in contrast to the models of the time, such as Cindy Crawford, Elle Macpherson, Claudia Schiffer, and Naomi Campbell, who were recognized for their voluptuous and towering proportions.

With a Calvin Klein ad in 1996, Moss was featured in the fashion style heroin chic (which provoked suspicion about her weight).

The trend was denounced by then-US President Bill Clinton. “It was just the right time,” Moss explained. People were surprised to see what they called a ‘waif,’ as a contrast to more buxom girls like Cindy Crawford.
