John Aylward was an American actor who lived from November 7, 1946, to May 16, 2022.
On the NBC television series The West Wing, he played former DNC chairman Barry Goodwin, and on ER, he played Dr. Donald Anspaugh. In Half-Life 2: Episode Two, he also provided the voice for Dr. Arne Magnusson.
In Seattle, Washington, Aylward was born and nurtured. He graduated from Garfield High School in 1965 after attending St. Joseph’s Grade School and Prep High School.
In 1970, he received his degree from the University of Washington’s Professional Actor’s Training Program. He was one of the founding members of Seattle’s Empty Space Theatre in 1973, and he was a regular company member of the Seattle Repertory Theatre for 15 years before becoming a television and film actor in the 1990s.
After witnessing him in a 1996 performance of “Psychopathia Sexualis” at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, Carol Flynt, co-producer of ER, initially offered him an audition.
On May 16, 2022, at the age of 75, Aylward died in Seattle.
