Larry Rayfield Wright was an offensive tackle with the National Football League’s Dallas Cowboys for 13 seasons. In 2006, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Wright grew up in Griffin, Georgia, and went to Fairmont High School, which later amalgamated with Griffin High School. He was a basketball letterman, but he didn’t make the high school football squad.

Wright played college basketball at nearby Fort Valley State College, where he was a standout player.

Head coach Stan Lomax forced him to leave his summer work at a mill to prepare for the Wildcats’ football team the next summer.

Lomax utilized Wright as a punter, defensive end, and tight end after trying him at free safety. Wright saw the coach as a father figure.

At 182nd overall in the 1967 NFL/AFL selection, Wright was taken by the Dallas Cowboys as a tight end.

Tight end, defensive lineman, and offensive tackle were just some of the positions Big Cat played in his first three seasons in Dallas.

After Ralph Neely was forced to miss time due to injury during his third season, Wright earned his first start in 1969.

In his debut, he faced future Hall of Fame defensive end Deacon Jones of the Los Angeles Rams, who was still in the prime of his career.

On the first day of training camp in 1970, Wright was already the starting right tackle because of his outstanding performance.

At right tackle, Wright started in six NFC Championship games and won two Super Bowls throughout a 13-year career that saw him play more than 200 games (VI, XII).

During the 1971 season, he received his first of four All-Pro awards and was selected to the first of six consecutive Pro Bowls.
