Jeffrey Ross Toobin is a CNN legal commentator, author, and blogger from the United States. He was an associate counsel in the Department of Justice during the Iran–Contra incident.
During the 1990s, he transitioned from the government to journalism, writing for The New Yorker from 1993 to 2020, when he was dismissed for masturbating on camera during a video conference call with coworkers.
Toobin is the author of a number of books, including one about the O. J. Simpson murder case. The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story, based on the novel, premiered in 2016 as the first season of FX’s American Crime Story
Toobin, the son of Marlene Sanders, a former ABC Television and CBS News correspondent, and Jerome Toobin, a news broadcasting producer, was born in 1960 to a Jewish-American family in New York City.
Mark, his younger brother, was born with Down syndrome in 1967 and lived apart from the family. He went to Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School before enrolling at Harvard College for his undergraduate studies.
He was a sports reporter for The Harvard Crimson. Toobin received a Harry S. Truman Scholarship and a magna cum laude Bachelor of Arts degree in American history and literature.
He subsequently went to Harvard Law School, where he was a classmate of Elena Kagan and received his J.D. magna cum laude in 1986. He was an editor of the Harvard Law Review during his time there.
While still a law student, Toobin began freelancing for The New Republic. After passing the bar, he served as a legal clerk for a federal judge before joining Independent Counsel Lawrence Walsh as an associate counsel during the Iran–Contra affair and Oliver North’s criminal trial.
After that, he worked as an Assistant United States Attorney in Brooklyn for the Eastern District of New York.
