William Laurence Bingham was a Northern Ireland international footballer and manager who lived from 5 August 1931 to 9 June 2022. Glentoran was his first professional club, and he played for them from 1948 to 1950. After moving to England, he spent eight years with Sunderland, appearing in 227 games.
Bingham, the son of a shipyard worker, was a successful player before becoming a manager, starting with Irish League club Glentoran on a reputed £6 a week before traveling to England. He operated in a wide attacking role or an outside-right as the position was then known.
Bingham joined First Division club Sunderland as a 19-year-old prospect in 1950, making his international debut the following year. He also played for Northern Ireland in the 1958 World Cup finals in Sweden and managed Everton and the Greek national team.
After winning 56 caps for his country as a player between 1951 and 1963, including appearances at the 1958 World Cup, Bingham became the manager of Northern Ireland twice (1967-1971 and 1980-1993).
According to Bingham’s son David, Bingham had been diagnosed with dementia back in 2006 and it was a testimony that he was able to live for another 16 years before he passed away today.
