Former footballer Billy Bingham passed away yesterday June 9 at the age of 90. William Laurence Bingham as he was named at birth was a Northern Ireland international footballer and manager who lived from 5 August 1931 in Belfast, North Ireland.

Glentoran was his first professional club, and he played for them from 1948 to 1950. After moving to England, he spent eight years with Sunderland, appearing in 227 games.

In 1958, he moved to Luton Town, where he spent three years and made nearly 100 league games. After that, he spent two years with Everton, when he nearly reached 100 league appearances again. At the age of 33, he ended his career after breaking his leg in a match for Port Vale in 1964.

His managerial career would be as illustrious as his playing one. He was appointed manager of Northern Ireland two years after taking charge of Southport in 1965, after leading the “Sandgrounders” to promotion from the Fourth Division.

He also managed Plymouth Argyle and then Linfield during his stint as an international manager.
