Ernst Walder was born on November 17, 1927, in Salzburg, Austria.
From December 1960 to December 1961, he played Ivan Cheveski on a regular basis in Coronation Street, then made guest appearances from December 1962 to January 1963, October to November 1966, and September to December 1967.
On television and in films, he was frequently cast in German parts. He arrived in England in 1952 after fleeing the Russian zone of Eastern Europe after being apprehended by the invaders for assisting refugees in their journey west.
After moving west, he worked as a valet and butler before pursuing acting and landing his first film part in The One That Got Away.
In a 2013 interview with the Austrian newspaper Kurier, Walder described being assaulted by an elderly woman in a London department shop after the broadcast of an episode in which he insulted a pregnant Linda Cheveski.
He also recalled how, after the birth of his TV son, people sent him cigars, champagne, and baby toys.
He dated Tony Warren, the inventor of Street, for a while in the 1960s.
