At the age of five, he began taking music lessons. In the beginning, he was taught to play the tabla and to sing by his father and his Guru.

The first time he played on the radio was when he was just twelve years old in Jammu.

While his father had done great research on the santoor, he had hoped that his son would become the first person in the world to perform Indian classical music on the instrument.

He began learning Santoor at the age of thirteen in order to achieve his father’s ambition. In Bombay in 1955, he performed for the first time in front of an audience (present day Mumbai).

Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje was released in the next year, and he composed the music for one of the sequences. In 1960, he released his debut solo record.

After working with Hariprasad Chaurasia and Brij Bhushan Kabra on the concept album “Call of the Valley” in 1967, it became one of India’s most popular albums.

As a result, the CD became a huge success in the world of Indian Classical Music.
