Toru Takahashi was a Tokyo-based photo editor and photographer who spent decades of his career taking pictures and sharing his knowledge with his colleagues. Takahashi reportedly passed away on Friday, just days after returning home from the hospital according to his wife.
Takahashi was from Kumamoto in southern Japan and joined the AP in Tokyo as an editorial assistant. He was running errands for other photographers and reporters. He was taught how to speak English by his senior staff members and was able to get a job in editing and taking photos.

Many of Takahashi’s coworkers said he impressed them not only with his work ethic but also “Laughter surrounded him all the time”.
