Troy Kotsur, an American actor and filmmaker was born July 24, 1968 in Mesa, Arizona in the United States of America to JoDee and Leonard Stephen “Len” Kotsur.

Troy’s parents found out he was deaf when he was nine months old so they learned sign language to enable them communicate with him. When he attained school going age, his parents took him to the Phoenix Day School for the Deaf.

He later went to Westwood High School where he showed interest in acting. He was encouraged to participate in the senior variety show that was coming up. During the event, Troy performed a pantomime skit that was positively received. This motivated him and he decided to pursue theater.

After high school, Troy had an internship training at KSAZ-TV where he was made to assist in editing. After his internship program, he attended Gallaudet University where he studied theater, television and film and graduated in 1989.

Upon completion of his university education, Troy got an acting job from the National Theatre of the Deaf. In 1994, he began working at the Deaf West Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
