What is the Status of Tyler Glasnow?
The promising starter underwent surgery on Wednesday to repair a significant tear in his troublesome elbow, which went well by all reports.
Dr. Keith Meister performed a hybrid procedure in which, in addition to the standard Tommy John ligament repair/replacement, an internal brace a suture-like tape coated in collagen was attached to the new ligament to strengthen it and prevent further injury, which is especially important in hard throwers.
On Friday, Glasnow, 27, was cleared to throw off the mound for the first time, but he continued to have elbow soreness.
Glasnow was placed on the 10-day injured list by the Rays on June 15 due to a UCL and flexor strain. Prior to his injury, he had a 2.66 ERA in 88 innings pitched, with 123 strikeouts.
After feeling tightness and “a little tug” in his right elbow during his last start against the White Sox on June 14, Glasnow received an MRI in Chicago. In the Rays’ 5-2 victory, he left the game after the fourth inning.
After Major League Baseball announced its plan to prohibit pitchers from using grip enhancers, Glasnow told reporters he thought his injury was caused by his recent decision to stop using sunscreen and rosin to get a grip on the ball.
Will Tyler Glasnow Pitch Again?
The Rays’ only option right now is to wait for Tyler Glasnow to return. Then make a decision on whether or not he will pitch for the team again.
Glasnow will most likely not return until the 2023 season due to a 12-to-14-month rehabilitation time.
While anyone who knows Glasnow knows he’ll assault the rehab program, considering his career trajectory and financial prospects, rushing back for the last weeks of 2022 makes little sense.
