Brendan Joel McKay is an American professional baseball pitcher and designated hitter for the Tampa Bay Rays of Major League Baseball. He was born on December 18, 1995. (MLB). McKay was chosen fourth overall in the first round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft by the Rays. He was a member of the University of Louisville baseball team.
In Chippewa, Pennsylvania, McKay attended Blackhawk High School. He was a four-year member of the varsity baseball team and also played one season of high school basketball. He went 72+13 innings without allowing a run as a senior.
In 2015, McKay pitched and played first base for Louisville as a freshman. McKay made 13 starts and pitched in 20 games. He finished with a 9–3 record, a 1.77 ERA, 117 strikeouts, and four saves. He hit.308/.418/.431 with four home runs and 34 RBIs in 61 games as a first baseman (RBI). He received the John Olerud Award for his two-way success.
Baseball America selected McKay Freshman of the Year as well. He played collegiate summer baseball for the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Bourne Braves after the 2015 season.
McKay won the John Olerud Award again as a sophomore. He went 12–4 with a 2.30 ERA and 128 strikeouts as a pitcher, and.333/.414/.513 as a hitter with six home runs and 41 RBI.
He also played for the Tampa Bay Rays, where he was drafted in the first round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft with the fourth overall pick. His $7 million signing bonus with the Rays is the second most since the draft was restricted in 2012. (Hunter Greene).
