The Rays picked McKay’s contract and promoted him to the major leagues on June 28, 2019. McKay pitched a perfect game into the sixth inning in his major league debut against the Texas Rangers the next day.
In the process, he pitched six innings and allowed two base runners. On July 1, he made his major league debut as a batter, going 0-for-4 as the Rays’ designated hitter against the Baltimore Orioles.
During the All-Star break, he was sent down to AAA but was recalled on July 13, 2019, as the 26th man in a doubleheader versus the Orioles.
On September 22, McKay hit his first Major League home run against Trevor Kelley of the Boston Red Sox. After testing positive for COVID-19, McKay was forced to miss the start of the 2020 season.
On August 11, he resumed working out but was forced to stop due to shoulder discomfort. McKay underwent left shoulder surgery on August 18 and will miss the whole 2020 season, according to the Rays.
In 2021, McKay came back to pitch in seven games, three with the rookie-level Florida Complex League Rays and four with the Durham Bulls.
