Shirley Hughes passed away due to a brief illness on February 25, 2022. She died at the age of 94.
Winifred Shirley Hughes, CBE, was an illustrator and author from the United Kingdom. She has written and illustrated over 200 books, with over 11.5 million copies sold.
She was a Londoner as of 2007. Hughes was awarded the Kate Greenaway Medal for artwork in British children’s books in 1977 and 2003.
Hughes illustrated and wrote 60 books during his 70-year career, winning BookTrust’s inaugural lifetime achievement award in 2015.
She was voted the most popular winner of the Kate Greenaway medal for illustration in the first 50 years.
Her picture book Dogger, which told the story of a little boy who is heartbroken when his beloved toy dog turns up at a jumble sale.
In 2015, she received the first BookTrust lifetime achievement award. The Eleanor Farjeon Award was given to her. She supported the Association of Illustrators as a patron.
Hughes was inspired to create lithographic pictures and work in the picture book style at Oxford.
After graduating, she worked mostly as an illustrator for other authors’ books, such as Dorothy Edwards’ My Naughty Little Sister and Noel Streatfeild’s The Bell Family.
Lucy & Tom’s Day, which was turned into a series of books, was her first published book, which she both authored and illustrated.
