Is Michael Wacha a Starting Pitcher?

Michael Wacha has been a starting pitcher when he played for the Rays until he join the Sox.

Right-hander Michael Wacha was signed to a one-year contract by the Red Sox on Saturday, according to Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom.

Wacha is in his tenth season in the big leagues. With the Tampa Bay Rays in 2021, he pitched 124 2/3 innings, which was good for second on the team.

He had a 3-5 record with a 5.05 ERA, 121 strikeouts, and 31 walks in 31 innings pitched.

In his final seven outings, including six starts, Wacha pitched to a 2.88 ERA, allowing 11 earned runs over 34 1/3 innings.

He subsequently topped MLB with four outings in which he pitched at least five innings while allowing zero runs and one or zero hits.

Wacha debuted in the major leagues with the St. Louis Cardinals in May 2013, less than a year after being drafted 19th overall out of Texas A&M University.

As a rookie, he was 4-1 in the postseason with a 2.64 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 30 2/3 innings.

After pitching 13 2/3 scoreless innings with 13 strikeouts in both starts against the Los Angeles Dodgers, he was awarded Most Valuable Player of the 2013 National League Championship Series.

The Cardinals will eventually fall to the Red Sox in the 2013 World Series.
