Wacha was a three-year member of the Texas A&M University baseball team. Wacha was 6′ 5″ tall, weighed 180 pounds (82 kg), and threw his fastball at speeds of 84 to 88 mph (135 to 142 km/h).
He made ten starts in 25 appearances as a freshman, posting a 2.90 ERA and a 9–2 record in the process.
In 105+13 innings pitched, Wacha struck out 97 batters and walked 22. In the Big 12 Conference, his nine victories were tied for seventh, and his 2.90 ERA was tied for sixth.
Wacha was chosen a freshman All-American by Louisville Slugger for his efforts.
Wacha had a 9–4 record in 16 starts as a sophomore, with 123 strikeouts and only 20 walks in 129+23 innings pitched and a 2.29 earned run average.
With 129.2 innings pitched and 123 strikeouts, Wacha topped the Aggie pitching staff. In 19 starts, he pitched two complete games.
In his season debut against Le Moyne, he pitched six shutout innings (Feb. 19). On March 19, Wacha threw his first career complete game against No. 2 Oklahoma, allowing just one run on seven hits while striking out eight.
His efforts earned him a berth on the Third Team All-American and the Second Team All-Big 12 teams. Wacha was a member of the Collegiate National Team of the United States of America.
At the end of his sophomore year, he also pitched in the Big 12 Championship, NCAA College Station Regional, and College World Series.
