Hudson Sanchez was his given name until 2016 when he took the surname of his stepfather. The San Diego Padres chose him in the first round of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft out of Carroll Senior High School.
He had signed with the Padres after committing to play baseball for the Texas A&M Aggies in college.
Potts divided 2016 between the Arizona League Padres and the Tri-City Dust Devils, batting.280 with one home run and 27 RBIs in 59 games with both organizations after signing his contract.
In 125 games for the Fort Wayne TinCaps in 2017, he batted.253 with 20 home runs, 69 RBIs, and a.731 OPS, and in 128 games for the Lake Elsinore Storm (earning California League All-Star honors) and the San Antonio Missions in 2018, he batted.260/.335/.455 with 19 home runs and 63 RBIs.
He hit.227/.290/.406 with 16 home runs and 59 RBIs in 107 games with the Amarillo Sod Poodles in 2019. After the 2019 season, Potts played for the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League.
