Merrifield was selected in the ninth round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Kansas City Royals in 2010.

He joined with the Royals and debuted with the Burlington Bees that same season. He had a.253/.317/.409 batting line in 47 games, with five home runs and 26 RBIs.

Merrifield hit .262 with five home runs and 36 RBIs while playing for the Wilmington Blue Rocks in 2011.

He batted .258 with nine home runs and 44 RBIs in 125 games for both Wilmington and the Northwest Arkansas Naturals in 2012.

He hit .270/.319/.391 with three home runs and 43 RBIs in 94 games with Northwest Arkansas in 2013.

Since the Royals won the World Series in 2015, Merrifield has been one of the team’s biggest pleasant surprises and bright spots.

In four seasons, he’s hit .296 and has twice led the league in hits, stolen bases, and triples.

Merrifield has only missed four games in the last two seasons and has 1,442 plate appearances. He has appeared in at least six games at every fielding position except shortstop and catcher during his career.

He’s spent the most time at second base and right field, but in 2020, he’ll be the primary starting centerfielder.
