From 1966 to 1978, Comolli was editor in chief of Cahiers du cinéma, during which time he wrote the seminal essays “Machines of the Visible” (1971) and “Technique and Ideology: Camera, Perspective, Depth of Field” (1971–72), both of which have been translated into English anthologies of film and media studies.

In the aftermath of May 1968, this work was critical in the discussion of apparatus theory, an attempt to reimagine cinema as a location for the development and preservation of dominant state ideology.

Comolli continued to work as a filmmaker after leaving Cahiers and has subsequently authored various books on cinema theory, documentary, and jazz. At the universities of Paris VIII, Barcelona, Strasburg, and Genève, he taught film theory.

Comolli was invited to the Visions du réel documentary film festival in Nyon, Switzerland, in the spring of 2008, where he developed his documentary cinema philosophy.
