Authorities in Texas say they shot and killed an inmate, Gonzalo Artemio Lopez who escaped from a prison bus and was accused of killing five people.

By the time the bodies of an adult and four children were discovered in Leon County on Thursday evening, a huge manhunt had been launched for 46-year-old Gonzalo Lopez.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice believes that Lopez broke into the home and committed the murders. A 1999 white Chevy Silverado, clothing, and guns were reportedly taken from the residence by Lopez at the time of his arrest.

The victims’ primary place of abode was in Houston, and the mansion was thought to be a weekend retreat for them. They were found dead at 6 p.m. local time when an older relative who hadn’t been heard from inside the house called the police because they were concerned about their safety.

Authorities initially reported the deaths of two adults and three children. Lopez’s stolen pickup vehicle was seen later that night by Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office deputies, who pursued it.

Jourdanton, Texas, about south of San Antonio and about 250 miles southwest of Leon County, was the site of a spike strip that destroyed the vehicle’s four tires.

The guy then shot at the deputies from the window with a rifle, prompting them to respond with their own fire, according to the police.
