Andrew John Leonard Fletcher, popularly known as Fletch, was an English keyboard player, DJ, and founding member of the electronic band Depeche Mode.

He was born on July 8, 1961, and died on May 26, 2022. He and his band were both inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020.

When punk rock first appeared on the music scene in 1976, Fletcher was 15 years old. “Obviously, the optimum age to enjoy it…we were really fortunate in life,” he remarked.

Bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Cure, Kraftwerk, the early Human League, and early OMD influenced him.

Fletcher played bass guitar in the short-lived band No Romance in China, which he established with schoolmate Vince Clarke.

At the Van Gogh pub on Paycocke Road in Basildon in 1980, Fletcher met Martin Gore. The trio, now all on synthesizer, created a new ensemble called Composition of Sound with Clarke.

Until singer Dave Gahan was hired into the band later that year, Clarke served as principal songwriter and also provided lead vocals, after which they chose the moniker Depeche Mode at Gahan’s suggestion.
