Angela Rayner, born in Stockport in 1980, Angela Rayner is Shadow First Secretary of State and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. Before entering politics, Rayner was a Trade Union officer with UNISON and a care worker. Rayner left school at 16 without qualifications after falling pregnant. She has since revealed that she also cared for her severely depressed mother at this time. Rayner regularly refers to her working-class background and how it influences her politics.
In 2015, Angela Rayner became the first woman MP in the 180-year history of her Ashton-under-Lyne constituency. She was soon promoted to the shadow whip’s office by the new Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn and then went on to hold the position of Shadow Pensions Minister, before becoming a member of the Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Secretary of State for Education.
In March 2020, Angela was elected as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. Angela is also Shadow First Secretary of State, Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Shadow Secretary of State for the Future of Work.
