Before her ascension in 1952, her position as head of several sovereign republics had already been cemented. On a seven-month globe trip in 1953, the Queen and her husband visited 13 countries and flew, sailed, and drove almost 40,000 miles (64,000 kilometers) in total.
In doing so, she became the first reigning queen of Australia and New Zealand to visit those countries. During the tour, the audiences were enormous; it was claimed that three-quarters of the Australian population saw her.
The Queen has made hundreds of state visits to various nations and tours of the Commonwealth during her reign; she is the world’s most traveled head of state.
