Denials of drug use and trafficking charges were made by Ford, who had never been prosecuted. He also accused the newspaper of unfairly targeting his brother Rob Ford, who was mayor at the time.

As part of its defense before an Ontario Press Council hearing, the newspaper said that its reporting was fair and ethical and that it used anonymous sources when necessary. As far as Ford was concerned, the newspaper would be sued for libel.
