Kavanaugh was born in Washington, D.C., on February 12, 1965, to Martha Gamble  and Everett Edward Kavanaugh Jr. His Irish Catholic ancestry runs through both sides of his family.

In the late 19th century, his great-great-grandfather moved to the United States from Roscommon, Ireland, and his maternal Irish ancestry dates back to his great-great-grandparents’ settlement in New Jersey.

Kavanaugh’s father was a lawyer and Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association president for twenty years. In the 1960s and 1970s, his mother taught history at Woodson and McKinley high schools in Washington.

She obtained a law degree from American University in 1978 and served as a Montgomery County, Maryland Circuit Court judge from 1995 to 2001.

Kavanaugh grew up in the city of Bethesda, Maryland. As an adolescent, he attended Georgetown Preparatory School, a Jesuit college preparatory school for boys, where he was two years ahead of Neil Gorsuch, with whom he later clerked at the Supreme Court and ultimately served as a Supreme Court justice.

He was the basketball team’s captain and played wide receiver and cornerback on the football team. Kavanaugh was also close with fellow classmate Mark Judge, with whom he shared a classroom with Maryland state senator Richard Madaleno.

In his yearbook, Kavanaugh referred to a female student at a nearby Catholic school as “Renate Alumnius.”

After graduating from Georgetown Prep in 1983, Kavanaugh, like his paternal grandpa, attended Yale University.

Several of Kavanaugh’s contemporaries at Yale recalled him as a “serious but unassuming student” who enjoyed sports, particularly basketball.

He auditioned unsuccessfully for the Yale Bulldogs men’s basketball team before spending two years on the junior varsity squad.

He published articles for the Yale Daily News about basketball and other sports and was a member of the fraternity Delta Kappa Epsilon. In 1987, he earned a Bachelor of Arts with honors in history from Yale University.
