Bruce Johnson: May 5, 1950-April 3, 2022(Resident of Delaware, United States)

Bruce Johnson, a veteran anchor for WUSA9, died of heart failure early Sunday in Delaware. He was 71 years old at the time.

Lori, his wife, three children (Brandon, Kurshanna, and Carolyn), and three grandchildren survive him.

From March 16, 1976, through December 31, 2020, the great Johnson committed 44 years of his professional life to narrating incredible stories for WUSA9. “Heart to Heart,” “All or Nothing,” and “Surviving Deep Waters” were his three novels.

Johnson was inducted into the Society of Professional Journalists Hall of Fame, the Washington, DC Hall of Fame, and the University of Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame throughout the course of his career.

He is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and the National Press Club and has received practically every prestigious journalistic award, including the Ted Yates Award and the NATAS Board of Governors Award.

From Rome, Bangkok, Moscow, Budapest, and Cuba, he filed special reports. He has earned hundreds of civic accolades from DC groups, mayors, and a resolution from the DC City Council in his honor.

Johnson’s passion for the individuals he reported on, and the empathy with which he conveyed their tales, set him apart from the legions of television reporters and anchors, and that characterized his tenure at WUSA9.

Johnson put his heart and everything into every job, from Freddie Gray to the Flower family, Rashema Melson, Marion Barry, and even a young football team striving to reach the championship in Orlando.

WUSA9 wishes to honor the Johnson family’s request for privacy at this difficult time.

We will be eternally grateful for Johnson’s unending efforts over the years, and he will be sorely missed by his television family, many of whom considered him a personal friend. WUSA9 will air remembrances of his life.
