Doug Ford businessman and politician who has served as the 26th and current premier of Ontario since June 2018 and leader of the Progressive Conservative (PC) Party.
The Globe and Mail published an investigation in May 2013 alleging that Ford sold hashish in James Gardens for several years in the 1980s, based on anonymous sources.
Denials of drug use and trafficking charges were made by Ford, who had never been prosecuted. He also accused the newspaper of unfairly targeting his brother Rob Ford, who was mayor at the time.
As part of its defense before an Ontario Press Council hearing, the newspaper said that its reporting was fair and ethical and that it used anonymous sources when necessary. As far as Ford was concerned, the newspaper would be sued for libel.
In a 2018 interview, he explained that he had determined that a lawsuit would be a waste of time when asked why he hadn’t done so. According to Ford, the developmentally handicapped adolescent residence in his district had devastated the neighborhood.
