Eduardo Lizalde, one of today’s most distinguished Mexican poets and essayists, died on Wednesday at the age of 93, according to Mexico City’s Ministry of Culture.

The poet, who was awarded the Carlos Fuentes International Prize for Literary Creation in the Spanish Language in 2017, died of unexplained circumstances at the moment.

Lizalde (Mexico City, 1929) was later hailed as “the most important living poet in Mexico and one of the most prominent in the Spanish language” by the Secretary of Culture, Mara Cristina Garca Cepeda.

The author studied philosophy at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), as well as music at the National Institute of Fine Arts’ Higher School of Music (INBA).
