What Happened Between Albert Pujols And Deidre Pujols?
Albert Pujols, the slugger for the St. Louis Cardinals, announced on Monday that he is divorcing his wife, Deidre, who had a brain tumor removed just days earlier.
Pujols, who is almost certain to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, admitted that his timing was off.
“I understand this isn’t the most convenient time, especially with Opening Day approaching and other recent family events,” the player stated in a statement posted by his agent.
“These situations are never simple, and they don’t happen by themselves.”
In an Instagram post on Sunday, Deidre Pujols thanked physicians for “saving his life and caring for him after such a huge surgery.”
A text message received during an exhibition game informed the Cardinals veteran that last week’s operation was a success.
He thanked fans for their good wishes, but, as The Associated Press previously reported, he had no plans to leave the Cardinals’ training camp and travel to California to be with her.
For the past 22 years, the pair has been married.
“I am grateful for the five lovely children we brought into this world and will continue to raise them in a loving and safe atmosphere,” he said in the statement.
Deidre Pujols could not be reached for comment by HuffPost.
Pujols is starting his 22nd and presumably final season with the team for whom he spent his first 11 years in the league, after dividing 2021 between the Angels and Dodgers.
With St. Louis, he signed a one-year contract worth $2.5 million.
