How did the Red Sox get Jeter Downs?
On February 10, 2020, Downs was sold to the Boston Red Sox along with Alex Verdugo and Connor Wong for Mookie Betts, David Price, and cash considerations.
Due to the discontinuation of the minor league season in 2020, Downs did not play. After the 2020 season, Baseball America ranked Downs as the Red Sox’s second-best prospect.
Downs began the 2021 season with the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox.
In May, he was named to the Colombian national baseball team’s roster for the Americas Olympic Qualifying Event. He was selected to play in the All-Star Futures Game, where he went 1-for-2 with a double and two runs batted in.
With Worcester, Downs batted.190 in 99 games, with 14 home runs and 39 RBIs. After the regular season, Downs was selected to play in the Arizona Fall League.
On November 19, right before the Rule 5 draft, the Red Sox added Downs to their 40-man roster.
