Rafael Devers Calcao (born October 24, 1996) is a Major League Baseball third baseman for the Boston Red Sox. In 2017, he made his Major League Baseball debut, and in 2021, he was named to the All-Star team.
Devers was promoted to the Boston Red Sox on July 24, 2017, five days after the organization released Pablo Sandoval. Devers hit his first big league home run on July 26 against Andrew Moore of the Seattle Mariners.
Devers (at 20 years, 275 days old) became the youngest Red Sox player to smash a home run since Tony Conigliaro (at 20 years, 265 days old) in 1965.
On August 13, Devers blasted a game-tying home run off Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman in the ninth inning. Chapman’s fastball reached 102.8 mph (165.4 km/h), the fastest pitch hit for a home run since MLB began measuring pitch velocity in 2008.
Devers started a triple play on a ground ball hit by Yadier Molina of the St. Louis Cardinals on August 15, while playing third base.
Devers batted.284 with 10 home runs and 30 RBIs in 58 games with the 2017 Red Sox during the regular season. He started 56 games at third base and had a fielding percentage of.906.
