A Dominican-Haitian professional baseball outfielder with the New York Yankees, Estevan Haniel Florial was born on November 25, 1997. 2020 was the year he made his MLB debut.
Estevan Florial grew up in the Dominican Republic’s capital city of Santo Domingo. In recognition of his mother’s Haitian ancestry, he is a dual citizen of the two countries.
The Yankees initially claimed him as having been born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, which would have made him the first player of Haitian descent to play in the Major Leagues.
Florial signed with the New York Yankees in 2014, going under the name Haniel d’Oleo. When he was unable to submit a birth document, his contract with the Yankees was annulled, and in 2015, he re-signed with them under the name Estevan Florial.
That season, he made his professional debut with the Dominican Summer League Yankees 1, where he batted.313 with seven home runs and 53 RBIs in 57 games while hitting.313 overall.
On August 28, 2020, Florial was promoted to the major leagues. That same day, he made his MLB debut in the first game of a doubleheader against the New York Mets. He was eventually returned to the minors.
Florial was called up to the Yankees on July 20, 2021, to replace Trey Amburgey, who had been sidelined due to injury.
On a groundout to first base, he got his first major league RBI, and then hit his first major league home run, a single shot off of Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Enyel De Los Santos.
