Queen Elizabeth was Queen of England and Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death in 1603. Sometimes referred to as the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth was the last of the five monarchs of the House of Tudor.
Her mother was Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII’s second wife, who was killed at the age of 212. As a result, the legitimacy of Anne and Henry’s children was questioned.
Even after his death in 1553, Lady Jane Grey was left the throne by her half-brother Edward VI, who disregarded the claims of his two half-sisters, the Roman Catholic Mary and the younger Elizabeth, despite the law’s explicit prohibition.
Mary was crowned queen after Edward’s will was invalidated, and she promptly deposed Lady Jane Grey. A year into Mary’s rule, Elizabeth was imprisoned for helping Protestant insurgents.
In honor of her great-grandmothers, Elizabeth of York and Lady Elizabeth Howard, she was given the middle name “Elizabeth” at her Greenwich Palace birth on September 7, 1533.
She was Henry VIII’s second live-born child born out of wedlock. Henry VIII’s second wife, Anne Boleyn, was her mother.
