Thompson was born June 26, 1992, in Turner, Oregon, United States. As a professional baseball pitcher whose style of play is the submarine-style pitcher, Thompson bats right and throws right.
He attended Cascade High School in his birth town and played college baseball at Chemeketa Community College and Campbell University.
In 2013, he briefly played collegiate summer baseball for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod Baseball League.
The Houston Astros was the first baseball team to draft Ryan Thompson in the 23rd round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft.
