Alex was born October 24, 1988, in Moscow, Russia to Yevgeniy Volkov. In 2008, he signed with the M-1 Global and had the opportunity to make his professional MMA debut in April 2009 when he defeated Nikolay Pleshakov by TKO (punches) in just 80 seconds.

A month after this victory, he had another win when he fought against Adam Alikhanov and defeated him in just 20 seconds. A month later, he suffered his first professional defeat to Akhmed Sultanov.
