Is Inventing Anna a True Story?

Inventing Anna is a real life story portraying Anna Delvey (Anna Sorokin) convicted of crimes by defrauding banks, hotels, and rich individuals.

Anna Delvey, an impersonated German heiress accused of stealing money from banks, financial institutions, and friends between 2013 and 2017 to form a members-only club named the Anna Delvey Foundation, made headlines in New York Magazine’s Jessica Pressler’s story in 2018.

According to the New York Post, Sorokin was in fact an imposter who managed to con New York City’s super-wealthy into handing up a total of more than $275,000.

It didn’t take long for news of Sorokin’s stunning exploit to turn her into a scammer the internet either adored or despised.

A folk hero for those who felt the wealthy never paid their fair share or an example of millennial depression at its worst, she was both.

To this day, Sorokin maintains that the Anna Delvey Foundation was a legitimate endeavor despite her 2019 conviction on eight counts, including three counts of grand larceny and one count of attempted grand larceny.

Pressler’s comprehensive reporting influenced the creation of Anna. On the nine-episode series, she also serves as executive producer. The show follows Anna Chlumsky’s journalist Vivian, who is modeled on Pressler and played by Veep’s Anna Chlumsky.
