From 1999 to 2002, Xi served as Governor of Fujian before becoming Governor and Party Secretary of Zhejiang from 2002 to 2007.

Following the departure of Shanghai’s Party Secretary, Chen Liangyu, Xi was temporarily assigned to replace him in 2007.

In October 2007, he was appointed first secretary of the Central Secretariat by the CCP’s Politburo Standing Committee (PSC).

In 2008, he was named Vice President of the People’s Republic of China and Vice Chairman of the CMC as Hu Jintao’s projected successor as paramount leader.
