“The Ooze,” or Jonathan Aldair Araz, is a Panamanian professional baseball shortstop and second baseman for the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball (MLB).
He throws right-handed and is a switch hitter, standing 6 feet 0 inches (1.83 m) and weighing 150 pounds (68 kg).
On August 7, 2014, Araz signed as an international free agent with the Philadelphia Phillies. In 2015, he hit.254/.309/.370/.679 with two home runs and 18 RBI for the GCL Phillies.
Araz and Ken Giles were dealt with by the Houston Astros on December 12, 2015, in exchange for Brett Oberholtzer, Harold Araz, Mark Appel, Tom Eshelman, and Vince Velasquez.
In 2016, Araz was a member of the Greeneville Astros, and in 2017, he was a member of the Tri-City Valley Cats.
After testing positive for methamphetamines in 2017, he was suspended for 50 games. The 2018 season saw Araz spend his time between Ouad City and the Buies Creek Astros.
The Boston Red Sox picked Araz in the 2019 Rule 5 draft on December 12, 2019. On July 24, 2020, he made his MLB debut as a pinch hitter against the Baltimore Orioles in the Red Sox’s first game of the 2020 season.
On July 30, he made his first MLB start against the New York Mets, and on August 10, he got his first MLB hit against the Tampa Bay Rays.
