He began his professional career with the New York Yankees when he was drafted in the fourth round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft, with the 122nd overall pick. He received a $424,000 signing bonus when he joined the Yankees.
Montgomery was placed on the injured list the next day with a flexor strain after leaving a game against the Houston Astros after one inning due to elbow tightness. He was expected to be out for 6–8 weeks. Montgomery tore his ulnar collateral ligament while throwing on flat ground during rehab a few days previously, and was forced to undergo Tommy John surgery, thereby ending his season. He returned to the Yankees on September 15.
